How to evaluate DeFi yields

Look beyond the APY: each pool type has a different source of yield and its own risks.

APY is not guaranteed

Rates change with borrowing demand, fees, liquidity and incentives. A high APY can fall quickly.

TVL is not a safety score

A large balance can indicate liquidity and demand, but it does not replace an audit or due diligence on the protocol.

Liquidity pools have IL risk

A price divergence between paired assets can create impermanent loss and consume part of the fees and rewards.

Check the core risks

Consider smart-contract vulnerabilities, protocol risk, stablecoin depegs and exit liquidity before depositing.

FAQ

Questions about DeFi yields

What is APY in DeFi?

APY is an annualised yield estimate that assumes compounding. It uses current pool conditions and is not a promised rate.

How is a liquidity pool different from lending?

A liquidity pool usually requires a pair of assets and pays trading fees, but introduces impermanent-loss risk. Lending supplies one asset and earns borrower interest.

Why can a high APY be risky?

A high rate may depend on temporary emissions, thin liquidity or a volatile reward token. Yield and the reward price can fall sharply when incentives change.

How should I use TVL when choosing a pool?

TVL helps assess a pool’s scale and liquidity, not its safety. Review it alongside audits, withdrawal conditions and the risks of the asset and protocol.
